Swan Hill is an historic town set on the banks of the Murray River. It was established by pioneer explorer Major Mitchell in the early 1850s, and operated as one of the region’s major inland river trading ports, before later developing into agriculture. Swan Hill is now a popular tourist destination featuring a unique blend of history with a host of modern features. Visitors can step back in time at the historic Pioneer Settlement, which is located within walking distance of the Quality Inn Swan Hill. The region also offers visitors the opportunity to visit a range of attractions including historic homesteads, regional art galleries, numerous wineries, the local olive oil and nut farm, and the giant Murray Cod.
The Swan Hill region allows visitors to step back into yesteryear and experience what life was like for the early settlers at the Pioneer Settlement open-air museum. The Pioneer museum is located within walking distance to the Quality Inn Swan Hill and features over 50 original and recreated buildings filled with more than 60,000 antique and historic objects with local volunteers demonstrating old-fashioned crafts such as woodturning and blacksmithing. Visitors can enjoy various activities including taking a cruise on the Murray River aboard the historic PS Pyap paddle steamer, built in 1896. Vintage car rides and horse and carriage rides can also be enjoyed from the Pioneer Settlement. Other local attractions include the Flying Boat Museum at Lake Boga, the Murray Downs Golf Course, the Murray Light Spectacular and the Swan Hill Cup Racing Weekend held in June. Guests can also treat their tastebuds with a visit to the nearby Olsson’s Pheasant Farm and Andrew Peace Wines.
