Profile
Mackereth’s Hedon Farm is a testament to the resources of the colonists of the time who came to Australia unknowing of the climate and isolation.
The house was built in 1865 by Edwin H. Mackereth who came to Australia, firstly, in search of gold. He planted vines in the 1880s, of which one remains and with his sons, he supplied award-winning wines to the town. Current vineyard was planted by Mt Avoca Winery.
Restoration of the original house or ‘cottage’ had star moments and since completion has been enjoyed as a venue for weekend stays, plus a stunning wedding venue for 120 guests.
Accommodation includes two bedrooms, a new bathroom, and an open plan living room and dining area. The original kitchen, with no oven – includes a microwave oven and electric hotplates. Outside are barbecues and an open-fire pit (fire restrictions apply). Sleeping around the fire pit can be arranged. The interior has had a COVID update with French styling.
At its optimum in autumn and spring, sensational at night. Only two kilometres from High Street, Hedon Farm offers a country experience enhanced by an overnight stay in a cottage (with continental breakfast) which is steeped in local history.
